Magnitude 7.8 Earthquake Strikes Off Southern Philippines, Tsunami Warnings Issued

Muscat: A magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines, the US Geological Survey said. The quake occurred at a depth of 35 kilometres off the island of Mindanao.

According to Oman News Agency, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre indicated that tsunami waves could be possible within the next three hours along the coasts of the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan, and Papua New Guinea. The centre estimated that wave heights might range from one to three metres above tide levels on Philippine coasts and between 0.3 metres and one metre on the shores of Indonesia and Malaysia.

Additionally, Japan's Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the Pacific coast, extending from the northern Okinawa islands to areas east of Tokyo. The Philippines frequently experiences seismic and volcanic activity due to its position within the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' where tectonic plates converge.
