Nama Electricity Distribution Focuses on Data Utilization for Enhanced Services

Muscat:Nama Electricity Distribution is planning a strategic shift from network digitization to maximizing data utility. This transition aims to enhance service development for subscribers, improve operational efficiency, and optimize network management.

According to Oman News Agency, Nama's strategy includes integrating smart meters with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS), and network sensing and control systems. This integration will support real-time monitoring, expedite fault localization, quicken emergency responses, restore services faster, and boost the efficiency and reliability of operational processes.

Eng. Khalfan Nasser Al Bartamani, Chief Commercial Officer at Nama Electricity Distribution, highlighted the company's commitment to deploying big data, advanced analytics, and artificial intelligence. These technologies will be used to create smart applications for asset and network performance monitoring, which will aid in predictive and focused maintenance, early problem detection, and efficient energy flow maintenance.

Nama has also implemented an outage management system linking the call center with emergency teams, utilizing real-time monitoring and GIS for quicker responses and improved subscriber experiences. Concurrently, the company is enhancing substations and networks, supporting renewable energy integration, and promoting local value addition and national competency development. This aligns with "Oman Vision 2040" by fostering a smart, data-driven electricity distribution system.

The company is pursuing an investment plan exceeding RO 600 million from 2026 to 2029 to develop and expand electricity networks, enhance infrastructure, and improve network readiness and efficiency, anticipating future electricity demand growth.

Nama operates a distribution network spanning over 105,000 kilometers across several governorates, excluding Dhofar, and has executed numerous projects to expand and strengthen electricity networks. In 2025, Nama's capital expenditure reached approximately RO 120 million, with significant investments in 11 kV and 33 kV network projects.

The Smart Meter Infrastructure project is a strategic initiative, with an 80 percent deployment rate by the end of 2025, enhancing data accuracy and supporting advanced analytics. Nama is committed to integrating smart meters with various systems to build an efficient digital network management system.

In 2025, Nama successfully completed the Automatic Load Transfer System project, which restores electricity automatically in case of transformer failure, thus enhancing network reliability. The company serves around 1.4 million subscribers, providing electricity to all populated areas within its operation scope, while focusing on infrastructure development and digital transformation.

Network reliability has improved, with the average outage duration in 2025 reduced to approximately 177 minutes, and the average outage frequency rate at about two times per subscriber.
