New york: The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) has passed a resolution urging Israel to withdraw from Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem. The resolution also reaffirms the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people, emphasizing their right to self-determination, the establishment of an independent state, and a just resolution of the Palestinian refugee issue in line with Resolution 194, adopted on December 11, 1948.
According to Oman News Agency, the resolution was passed with 151 votes in favor, 11 against, and 11 abstentions during the General Assembly’s 80th session under agenda item 35. This vote underscores the UN’s continued responsibility toward the Palestinian question until it is comprehensively resolved in line with international law and relevant UN resolutions. The resolution highlights that a just, lasting, and comprehensive settlement is crucial for peace and stability in the Middle East, emphasizing the importance of equal rights and self-determination
as fundamental to the UN Charter.
The resolution reiterates the inadmissibility of acquiring territory by force, stressing the need to respect the unity and territorial integrity of occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem. It obligates Israel, as the occupying power, to refrain from obstructing Palestinian self-determination and the establishment of an independent state on occupied Palestinian soil. Furthermore, it calls on all states to remove obstacles created by Israel’s illegal presence that hinder Palestinian rights.
Additionally, the resolution condemns Israeli settlement activities and unilateral measures altering the demographic and status of Jerusalem and the occupied territories. It demands the cessation of such activities, including the construction of the wall and its associated regime. The resolution also condemns the use of force against Palestinian civilians, especially children, in breach of international law, and underscores the need to ensure the safety and protection of c
ivilians across the Middle East, rejecting violence and terrorism against civilians on all fronts.
The resolution emphasizes the urgent necessity to end the Israeli occupation that began in 1967 and affirms the right of all regional states to live in peace within secure, internationally recognized borders. It calls for a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace based on relevant UN resolutions, including Security Council Resolution 2334 (2016), the Madrid terms of reference, the land-for-peace principle, and the Arab Peace Initiative. It also reaffirms support for a two-state solution based on pre-1967 borders, envisioning Palestine and Israel coexisting in peace and security.
