UN Warns of Severe Humanitarian Fallout as Lebanon War Displaces One Million

Rabat: The United Nations (UN) has warned that the humanitarian consequences of the war in Lebanon are severe, calling for civilians and civilian infrastructure to be spared the horrors of ongoing attacks. UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih, speaking after a meeting with Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam, said the talks provided an opportunity to reaffirm support and solidarity with Lebanon during its current ordeal.

According to Oman News Agency, Salih emphasized that Lebanon should not be caught in a recurring cycle of violence and that the country deserves both support and stability. He highlighted the plight of the Lebanese people, who have a history of hosting displaced populations and refugees, but are now experiencing unprecedented levels of displacement themselves. Over one million Lebanese have been forced to leave their homes, which represents nearly one-fifth of the nation's population.

Salih pointed out that the humanitarian crisis, along with the immense suffering it brings, presents a significant challenge not only to Lebanon but to the entire international community. He stated that efforts are being made by UNHCR and other UN-affiliated relief organizations to deliver essential humanitarian aid. However, the scale of the challenge is immense, and the suffering widespread, necessitating even greater international support.
