UN Secretary-General Renews Call for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

New York, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres renewed the call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, with all hostages released "immediately and unconditionally," and an end to the ongoing war on the Gaza Strip since 7 October 2023. The UN Spokesperson said that the Secretary-General is "shocked and saddened by the loss of lives" following the Israeli airstrikes that struck Al Mawasi area in the city of Khan Younis, south of the Gaza Strip, which left nearly 100 martyrs and 300 injured. In response to journalists' questions, the Office of the Spokesperson said a statement that reports indicated that nearly 100 people were killed, including children, and hundreds of others were injured in a densely populated area "designated as a humanitarian zone sheltering displaced people." "This underscores that nowhere is safe in Gaza," the Spokesperson stressed. "The Secretary-General condemns the killing of civilians, including women and children," he added. The Spokesperson stressed the need to adhere to inter national humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and taking precautionary measures during attacks. Since 7 October 2023, the Israeli occupation continues its aggression against the Gaza Strip by land, sea and air, resulting in the death and injury of tens of thousands, the majority of whom are women and children, while thousands of victims remain under the rubble.
