Muscat: The third International Conference on Environmental Science and Engineering for Sustainable Development 2026 commenced today in the Wilayat of Sohar, North Al Batinah Governorate: Held under the theme "Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies for a Zero-Carbon Future," the conference is organized by the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Sohar, with participation from researchers representing 13 countries across Asia and Africa.
According to Oman News Agency, the event was held under the patronage of HH Sayyid Fahr bin Fatik Al Said. The conference featured a number of specialized scientific tracks, most notably: nanotechnology applications, renewable and alternative energy, materials science, engineering design for sustainability, applications of artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, in addition to biological and environmental sciences, human behaviour, and its societal impacts on environmental sustainability.
Several specialized lectures were presented during the first day of the conference. They were presented by academics and experts from participating countries on topics related to sustainable engineering, including the role of mixed heat transfer in sustainable engineering, advanced artificial intelligence and the resilience of global supply chains and their impact on emerging economies, and the design and performance of sustainable composite materials for zero-emission maritime and aerospace applications.
A panel discussion was also held to exchange views and expertise on environmental and technical challenges and ways to harness innovation in support of sustainability, alongside the inauguration of the accompanying scientific exhibition. The conference brings together researchers from 13 countries across Asia and Africa, with 76 research papers being presented through in-person and virtual sessions, in addition to 48 scientific posters. The conference also features specialized scientific sessions and parallel e-sessions, as well as public sessions on the second day addressing industrial sustainability experiences and the transition towards carbon neutrality, with participation from national industrial institutions.
