The Ministry of Defense, represented by the Human Rights Directorate, conducted an exchange of remains of the first Gulf War (1980-1988) with the Iranian side through the Shalamcheh border crossing, under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The Ministry’s statement stated that (8) remains of unidentified Iraqi martyrs were received, and (18) Iranian remains were handed over, including (11) remains of unknown identity, which were excavated during joint search and excavation operations with the Iranian side in the operations sector (Basra, Maysan, Wasit, Diyala).
The remains of the Iraqi martyrs were transported into Iraqi territory with coffins draped with Iraqi flags and to the tunes of funeral military music for the purpose of completing medical examinations.
