Riyada Explores SME Impact on Food Security Sector

Muscat: Acting in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, the Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Riyada) today organized its 20th dialogue session titled 'Opportunities, challenges and impact of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the food security sector'. The session addressed key themes integral to the role of SMEs in Oman's food security landscape.

According to Oman News Agency, the dialogue centered on enhancing partnerships between SMEs and pertinent stakeholders. Discussions revolved around the policies governing the food security sector, alongside a review of licenses, incentives, and investment opportunities intended to stimulate entrepreneurship in the sector. The dialogue also underscored the potential for SMEs to explore new opportunities within the food security domain.

The session highlighted data indicating that 39,973 SMEs are involved in activities related to food security. This includes 32,537 micro enterprises, 7,054 small enterprises, and 382 medium enterprises. Additionally, it was noted that 10,703 enterprises have obtained the 'Riyada Card', a key facilitator in the sector.

Recommendations from the session emphasized the importance of developing a conducive business environment. Addressing the challenges faced by SMEs and bolstering their contributions to food security and economic diversification were identified as critical areas for progress.

The event was graced by the presence of Dr. Saud Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, and Halima Rashid Al Zar'i, Chairperson of the Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development (Riyada). Government officials, entrepreneurs, and specialists in the food security sector also participated, contributing to a comprehensive discussion on the future of SMEs in the sector.
