Muscat:The Ministry of Energy and Minerals has announced a new policy mandating the appointment of Energy Efficiency Officers in sectors with high energy consumption, aiming to enhance energy efficiency and promote sustainable resource management in Oman.
According to Oman News Agency, the policy is part of the Sultanate’s strategy to reduce energy consumption and waste, improve operational efficiency, support Oman Vision 2040, and achieve net zero emissions by 2050. It requires high energy-consuming entities to appoint a qualified Omani national to oversee energy consumption, analyze data, and implement efficiency improvements.
Eng. Salim Nasser Al Aufi, the Minister of Energy and Minerals, emphasized that energy-use efficiency is crucial for the development of Oman’s energy sector. He highlighted the need for effective energy consumption management alongside the expansion and diversification of electricity generation, to boost energy security and sustainable growth.
The policy also aims to integrate energy management into institutional responsibilities. It relies on the commitment of management in implementing energy efficiency into their plans and decisions, viewing it as a means to enhance performance, reduce costs, and improve competitiveness.
The minister noted that the policy’s impact goes beyond energy reduction by enhancing the national economy’s efficiency, reducing carbon emissions, and developing national expertise. Aligning entity efforts with national energy policies is seen as vital for achieving the goals of Oman Vision 2040 and the net zero emissions target.
A regulatory framework by the Oman Net Zero Center will detail the policy’s implementation, scope, and procedures. This initiative forms part of broader efforts by the Ministry to cultivate energy efficiency, encourage best practices, and develop specialized national capabilities, thereby optimizing energy resource use and ensuring economic and environmental sustainability in Oman.
