Fisheries Investment Forum in Oman Highlights Aquaculture Opportunities

Muscat: The Fisheries Investment Opportunities Forum, spearheaded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, commenced today with a focus on the expanding role of aquaculture both globally and within Oman. The two-day event aims to explore the sector’s challenges, share Oman’s experiences, and identify investment opportunities in the Sultanate.

According to Oman News Agency, the forum was inaugurated under the patronage of Eng. Ali Mohammed Al Abri, Undersecretary for Water Resources at the Ministry. The event gathers representatives from commercial aquaculture companies in Oman, potential investors, financial institutions, and experts from international bodies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and the World Aquaculture Society. Renowned academic institutions and international specialists are also participating as speakers.

The first day of the forum features two main discussion sessions. The initial session, titled “Global Context,” examines the current state of aquaculture in Oman, global market trends, existing challenges, and future prospects for the sector. The second session, “Global Opportunities for Aquaculture Species,” delves into farming techniques for species like salmon, shrimp, marine fish, and mollusks.

On the second day, the forum will address governance, regulatory frameworks, industry trends, leadership, and investment stimulation in aquaculture, using Chile’s experience as a successful global model. Discussions will also cover lucrative opportunities in Oman aligned with Oman Vision 2040, alongside presentations on financial services from Sohar International Bank and the success story of Musandam Aquaculture Company. Innovations in equipment and technologies, including artificial intelligence, will be showcased.

Oman’s marine environment supports the farming of over 15 aquatic species, such as white leg shrimp, Omani abalone, European sea bass, and Atlantic salmon, enhancing its appeal as a regional aquaculture hub. The Ministry’s ongoing initiatives aim to ensure sustainable growth, enhance food security, and boost the sector’s contribution to the national economy.
