Falconry, this ancient pastime passed down through generations and deeply rooted in the local culture, has a special place in the hearts of the residents of Turaif Governorate, in the Northern Borders region.
Many families in Turaif nurture the passion for falconry among the younger generation, teaching them traditional skills to preserve this heritage.
As the falconry season commences in early September each year, enthusiasts gear up for the exciting pursuit. The Hamad region, renowned for its migratory bird routes, attracts falconers from all over Saudi Arabia and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
Mohammed Al-Ruwaili, a keen falconer, said that the sport’s popularity stems from its enjoyable nature. Fathers often take their sons on falconry expeditions to educate them about hunting and caring for these magnificent birds, he said, adding that this practice helps instill a deep appreciation for the ancestors’ traditions.
The National Center for Wildlife had said September 1 is the date this year
‘s falconry season starts in the Kingdom. Hunting licenses are available through the Fitri platform.
