Chinese Scientists Develop AI Tool to Predict Liver Cancer Recurrence

Beijing: A Chinese research team has developed an AI tool that predicts liver cancer recurrence risk with 82.2 percent accuracy, according to a study recently published in the journal Nature.

According to Oman News Agency, liver cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with a postoperative recurrence rate as high as 70 percent. Accurately predicting recurrence has been a critical challenge in the medical field.

Researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China, led by Sun Cheng, have created a scoring system named TIMES. This system quantifies the spatial distribution patterns of immune cells within the tumor microenvironment to assess the likelihood of cancer relapse. TIMES is the world’s first liver cancer recurrence prediction tool that integrates spatial immune data.

The study indicated that the spatial organization of immune cells, rather than their quantity alone, determines clinical outcomes. By combining spatial transcriptomics, proteomics, multispectra
l immunohistochemistry, and AI-driven spatial analysis, the research team has established a novel method for assessing the tumor microenvironment. The system was trained using liver cancer tissue samples from 61 patients.

To facilitate broader accessibility, the researchers have launched a free online version of TIMES. This platform allows users worldwide to upload pathological staining images for immediate risk evaluation.

The research team aims to provide a revolutionary decision-making tool that will assist doctors in optimizing personalized treatments, particularly in resource-limited settings. Sun Cheng mentioned that they are actively collaborating with industry partners to standardize the clinical applications of their tool.
